In re: Passion of the Christ
Published by the Fourth Man February 25th, 2004 in US PoliticsThis is just a short one because I don’t really have any great interest in seeing Mel Gibson’s Biblical epic, but I thought it was worthy of sharing:
1) This qualifies as the best review of Passion of the Christ that I’ve seen so far.
2) On my home from work this evening I passed a Pentacostal church, apparently attempting to show support for Gibson and his interpretation of the New Testament. On the adboard out front (the ones with the replaceable letters - you know the type) they had, and I swear I’m not making it up:
“___S KILLED THE LORD JESUS” -1THES
Somebody apparently removed the J, E, and W in an attempt to not see Lovingway Pentacostal go down in the flames of public opinion.
Oh well, never let it be said that Mel Gibson hasn’t done his part for interfaith relationships. I’m outta here.
UPDATE: KMGH Denver has the story here, complete with photograph.
In San Francisco, that home of depravity and sin, the power went out just as the first showings of the Passion got underway.
I’m trying to figure out whether this means God loves SF, or if we’re so far into sin that there’s no hope for us.
Either way it’s fun.

Bahaha, that makes me almost wonder if someone actually *was* flipping a switch someplace, or if it actually was coincidence. ;)
God help me, I’m still thinking of whether to see the thing or not, if just out of historian’s curiosity..
This reminds me of the “Christians” who hold signs that say “God hates fags”… same thing. *sigh* It’s really frustrating to have these people embarrassing millions of people of faith who might, perhaps, have some clue what love, tolerance, etc. look like.
Bottom line, I can’t blame Mel Gibson for Christians who don’t know their Lord from a hole in their @$$.
I would disagree with the review in this respect - as a very, very amateur historian, I think the New Testament is a good deal anti-Semitic. Mel’s script is the New Testament, and Mel claims to have “followed the script”.
I don’t intend to see the movie - I’m not a fan of splatter, regardless of the subject matter. But I’m very afraid it will just reinforce anti-Semitism that lurks in the background of many Christians.
