Shahram Azam, a doctor who examined Iranian-Canadian journalist Zahra Kazemi shortly before her death, has received asylum in Canada and given a shocking account of her wounds. Kazemi died in 2003 after four days of “interrogation” following her arrest for photographing a protest against the arrest of political prisoners. An Iranian intelligence officer was charged […]

The Plot To Kill The Pope

As we witness the failing health of Pope John Paul II, we are lucky to have had him this far. In May 1981,
the Pope survived being shot four times by a gunman, Mehmet Ali Agca, who appeared to be a madman, although some suspected he might have been sent by the KGB.
Now this event […]

MLP

“…and the rule was laid down, we had to have two conservatives for every liberal. I was counted as two liberals.”
That’s Phil Donahue talking about his experience getting canceled on MSNBC, and on the state of the media in general. Worth a read.

Vapid News Network

I know I quipped about Kyrgyzstan being “best known for producing 90 points on a triple word score”, but we’re just a website with almost as many readers as we have authors. This is CNN here (2nd source):

O’BRIEN: Well, it looks like we’re talking about another revolution in a country some of us can’t […]

Argh.

And now comes news from Nigeria yet again; the quasi-religious anti-vaccination FUD in Kano rises up in support of measles, causing hundreds of deaths (and yes, that’s causation — the control group for the experiment would be southern Nigeria, with no deaths and fewer total cases than nothern Nigeria has had deaths).

Shame on Michael Schiavo for starting a family with another woman
while still legally married to Terri. Shame on the Schindlers for lying
about Terri’s
condition and Michael’s treatment of her. Shame on the quacks giving false hope to a family in distress. Shame on the
right-wing
groups soliciting donations for themselves by falsely implying
the money will go to Terri’s […]

So much for those reports from a few days ago that the revolution was only relegated to a few southern cities. I still haven’t read Soj’s site, but it probably has some good info on the matter.

The MPlayer project
replaced its home page in protest of the European Commission’s support
for software patents:

This site has been shut down because of numerous patent violations
in MPlayer. The other free software multimedia players are next.
Multimedia is a patent minefield. All important techniques and formats
are covered by broad and trivial patents that are harming progress and
alternative implementations, […]

Cross-Aisle Developments

Several interesting stories have popped up recently about actions that honestly look bipartisan.
Patriots to Restore Checks and Balances appears to consist mostly of conservative groups right now, including Americans for Tax Reform, the Eagle Forum, and the Second Amendment Foundation — but before you panic at the inclusion of Norquist and Schlafly’s pet orgs, the […]

Civil Liberties Coverage

Continuing the Zone’s practice of keeping a close eye on new and improved interpretations of civil liberties in the course of the War on Terra, we note that the Supreme Court of the U.S. has found (in the trial of Zacarias Moussaoui) that the government can seek the death penalty against a suspect charged with […]
