Listen! The government and industry plant secret microchips inside laser printers which put an invisible code on every document you print which they can use to tell who printed it and when!

It sounds like serious tinfoil hat stuff except it’s true and the codes have been broken by the Electronic Frontier Foundation. The codes are theoretically used to track down counterfeiters using high quality printers to produce replica currency, but they can just as easily be used to track the authors and producers of, say, political leaflets.

It’s getting way too easy to give serious credence to tinhattery. After it becoming fairly obvious that cellphone GSM encryption was deliberately weakened, this sort of tracking doesn’t surprise me.

    As much.

    Though it should.
